ROLLA - SPRING 2007 - Phelps County Regional Medical Center has launched a "Building a Career Ladder in Healthcare" School at Work program, which is a tool for the hospital to use in building a more skilled, promotable workforce from within. This program targets high potential employees and helps develop a focus on achievement and career growth. It is geared to provide mastery of knowledge, which not only helps employees to improve in their current jobs, but also gives them skills to potentially advance into higher paying positions for which certification is not necessarily required. Jeanne Locklear, PCRMC director of training and development and School at Work coach, described the selection process for the program as "rigorous." "Only 63 percent of those who applied were selected," Locklear said. "Participants will definitely find it challenging as well as rewarding." Candidates were required to apply for the program. Applicants were also required to have an in-person interview and provide a director's referral and a written statement why they should be selected. Participants will gain the skills they need to move ahead at work; refresh math, communications and reading skills, assist them in exploring new possibilities for their career in healthcare, enhance their computer and online learning skills and build self-confidence. Nationwide, School at Work has an average completion rate of 69.7 percent. Thirty-three percent of program graduates go on to continue their education and 67 percent of them will continue into a healthcare related field of study. Most importantly, 17 percent of program graduates achieve job advancement within 90 days of completing the program. |
