Google Health Discontinued

Google has made the decision to discontinue its online healthcare service, Google Health. Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) wants to ease the minds of patients who have utilized this service by electing to implement a similar online healthcare service, Microsoft HealthVault.  Health Vault includes the same concepts as Google Health provided: it is a place to manage, save and share health information online.  Members of Google Health who uploaded files can easily transfer them to Microsoft HealthVault.

Although the transition to a similar program may be inconvenient, PCRMC wants to help make the shift as painless as possible. The instructions for transferring files are listed below.  Just follow the prompts for a smooth conversion, and start enjoying the benefits of online health information once again.

Google Health will continue service through January 1, 2012. After this date, you will no longer be able to view, enter or edit data stored in Google Health. You will be able to download the data you stored in Google Health, in a number of useful formats, through January 1, 2013.

Transferring to Microsoft HealthVault

Microsoft is working to make sure it’s easy for Google Health users to transfer health information from your Google Health profile to a Microsoft HealthVault record.

Follow the steps below to send your information to HealthVault automatically, or if you’d prefer, you can manually download your information from Google, and then upload it to your HealthVault account.

Please note: This Google Health to HealthVault transfer process is available to U.S. residents only.

To transfer your health info:

  • Go to the Google Health account you wish to transfer information from. From the Download menu, select Send profile to another service.
  • You’ll see a new window. Select Microsoft HealthVault from the services dropdown, then click Send a copy of my profile.
  • Click the link in the email you receive and follow the instructions you’re given.
  • Sign in to (or create) your HealthVault account.
  • View your information in HealthVault.

Once your information is in HealthVault, you’ll find dozens of health and wellness tools to help you manage fitness, diet, health, and medical conditions for yourself and your family. Plus, HealthVault connects with a wide range of health and fitness devices that let you easily add your readings to your HealthVault record.

For more information on how to transfer your health information or on Microsoft Health Vault, please visit Microsoft’s website.

What is Google Health

Google Health is a personal health record service.  Once you create an email account through Google you are then able to sign up for Google Health.  The service enables you to volunteer your health records either manually or by logging into your accounts through PCRMC.  You then have access to a personalized and centralized system for your merged health records, which might include health conditions, medications, allergies, and lab results.  Google Health will never retrieve any part of your medical records without your explicit consent.
