Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac Catheterization is a minimally invasive procedure that uses small catheters and dye to examine the coronary arteries for plaque build-up. The procedure is used to diagnose disease and provides vital information about the heart valves and arteries, heart function, evidence of heart abnormalities and lung function. Cardiac catheterization can be used to diagnose coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, congestive heart failure, congenital heart disease and pulmonary disease.
Your physician may recommend cardiac catheterization if you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms:
- Chest pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Previous history of heart problems
- Strong family history of heart problems
Cardiac catheterization is also used for the following purposes:
- Perform preparation for a major surgery
- Implant a pacemaker or defibrillator
- Place stents in the kidneys and peripheral arteries.
