Phelps Regional Homecare Receives Top Honors

ROLLA – SUMMER 2007 - Phelps Regional Homecare recently received a deficiency-free Medicare and state licensure survey for home health services.

"The surveyor reviews all policies to ensure compliance with Medicare and state regulations," said Rhonda Teague, RN, BSN, director of Phelps Regional Homecare. "All levels of documentation are examined, and surveyors go on home visits with employees in each discipline to make sure that all procedures are being followed."

Additionally, the surveyor reviewed staff education to ensure that continuing education credits had been earned.

"The surveyor asked how we managed to have such a fine agency, and we said it was due to our committed and highly skilled staff," Teague said.

Had a deficiency been found, Teague said it would have indicated that the minimum expectations in a given area had not been met and a plan of corrective action would have been submitted.

In January, Phelps Regional Homecare underwent the Medicare and state-licensure survey for hospice services. It, too, came back with no deficiencies.

"Having no deficiencies simply validates what a great job the employees do," Teague said. "This marks the second time in a row to be deficiency free for hospice services. As a result, the survey results show that we give the highest quality care."

If a loved one needs extra care but doesn't require hospitalization, Phelps Regional Homecare can step in to provide those services, whether it's homemaker/in-home support, home health or hospice.

"Homecare professionals, volunteers and modern medicine make it possible for people to stay in their homes, regardless of their condition," Teague said.

Many physicians believe patients respond best in the warmth and familiarity of their own surroundings, where they can be close to loved ones and family members can participate in their care. Phelps Regional Homecare offers that freedom.

It is a Medicare certified, not-for-profit agency and is a service of Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

Home health provides short-term goal directed care performed by professional nurses and/or therapists. You are eligible for home health care if intermittent home visits can meet your healthcare needs, you are essentially homebound, your condition requires the skills of the staff, and you and/or your family is being taught to take over the needed care. These services must be ordered by your physician.

Hospice provides holistic care for the terminally ill in the comfort of the patient's or family member's home. You are eligible for hospice under the following conditions: You have a confirmed diagnosis of an advanced state of terminal illness, life expectancy is six months or less and there is an agreement among family, patient and your physician that hospice care is appropriate. Hospice care also requires a physician order.

Homemaker/In-home support provides supportive care that allows the patient to continue living at home. The agency provides homemaker/in-home support for residents in Phelps, Crawford, Maries and Dent counties as authorized through the Missouri Division of Senior and Disability Services and Veterans' benefits. Services can also be provided through a private payment option.

Phelps Regional Homecare's resource options include nursing (RNs and LPNs), telemonitoring, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, home health aides, medical social services, dietitians, chaplains, volunteers, personal care, housekeeping, respite and companions and private duty care.

Through technological advances, home-delivered health care has grown far beyond basic professional nursing and home care aide services. Phelps Regional Homecare offers the professional services of nursing, social work, physical, occupational and speech therapies. In addition, the agency's telemonitoring service offers clients remote, clinical oversight up to four times per day, seven days a week.

"Home health care is regarded as the most viable solution for providing long-term care to this country's growing elderly population," Teague said. "Homecare is one of the fastest growing segments of the health care industry because people acknowledge that the care and compassion homecare professionals provide to patients and their families is second to none."
