Registered Nursing Scholarship Funds

Purpose And Objectives
The purpose and objectives of the Phelps County Regional Medical Center Auxiliary James Foundation, Margaret Prater, Martha Ritter, and Emily Barnes Nursing Scholarship Funds shall be established as follows:

  1. To offer financial assistance to candidates of Phelps County to make possible training in their chosen careers of registered nursing at an approved (1) associate of and degree school of nursing, or (2) a diploma school of nursing.
  2. To contribute to the health care and therefore the general welfare of the citizens of Phelps County by making possible the training of registered nurses and encouraging them to return to their respective communities to practice.
  3. To render valuable support to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by furnishing financial assistance to future nurses and encouraging their return to positions on the above-mentioned hospital nursing staff.

The Program

  1. Up to six scholarships may be awarded annually to the candidates selected from Phelps County. The recipients of the scholarships may attend an approved undergraduate school of nursing of their choice.
  2. The scholarship shall be applied to actual charges made by the school of nursing to the student, but does not include transportation or personal expenses. The scholarship awarded shall be up to $1,000.00.

Selection of Candidates

  1. The Selection Committee shall be composed of the following persons: the Chief Executive Officer of Phelps County Regional Medical Center; the Director of Nursing of same hospital; the President of same hospital Auxiliary; the 2nd Vice-President and General Treasurer of same hospital; and the Director of Volunteer Services of same hospital; others appointed.
  2. It shall be the duty of the Selection Committee to receive applications, investigate the qualifications and character of the applicants, and select the candidates who will be awarded the scholarships. A candidate’s ability, dedication and financial need shall be primary factors to be considered by the Selection Committee.

Rules and Policies

  1. The Director of Nursing of Phelps County Regional Medical Center shall be available as a consultant and counselor for the dissemination of information about the scholarship program to any potential candidate seeking such information.
  2. Before making formal application for a scholarship, each candidate shall apply to and be accepted by a recognized school of nursing of his/her choice.
  3. Each candidate shall appear before the Selection Committee for a personal interview. The candidate shall provide written evidence of acceptance by the nursing school of his/her choice; a transcript of the most recent academic school grades and an application for a scholarship, as prescribed by the Selection Committee.
  4. Whenever possible, the Selection Committee will make designations of scholarship recipients in time for the awards to be presented at the applicant’s graduation from high school.
  5. If selected for a scholarship, a scholarship recipient shall agree to return to Phelps County within one year after graduation from nurse’s training for employment as a professional nurse by any employer within Phelps County who might reasonably require the services of a professional nurse.
  6. In the event a scholarship recipient, for any reason, fails to complete the prescribed course of training and become a licensed registered nurse in Missouri, the recipient shall repay in full all monies expended by the Fund within one year after the Fund has knowledge the recipient has withdrawn from school.
  7. In the event a scholarship recipient shall complete training and willfully fail to return for the required year of employment described above, the recipient shall repay in full all monies expended by the Fund within one year after graduation from nursing school.
  8. In the event a returning scholarship recipient is unable to obtain the required employment within a reasonable time after completing training, the Selection Committee shall have the right to grant a release from the employment obligation and agreement. In this case, no repayment of scholarship monies shall be required.
  9. In the event a scholarship recipient returns to fulfill the employment obligation as set out above, but for any reason fails to work the full period of one year as required, then the recipient shall repay the Fund that portion of the scholarship cost calculated on the ratio of actual employment to the required employment of one year. This repayment shall be due and payable within one year after graduation from nursing school.
  10. The Selection Committee shall furnish to each high school in Phelps County a typed or mimeographed copy of the operation rules and procedures of the scholarship program for permanent filing and at intervals will supply bulletin board notices to the schools directing the attention of the students to the program.

An applicant who has previously received a scholarship from the PCRMC Auxiliary will not be eligible for any additional scholarships.
