Spotlight on the Cardiology Services Department

In honor of American Heart Month, Phelps County Regional Medical Center is putting the spotlight on its Cardiology Services Department.

The PCRMC Cardiology Services Department is comprised of five specialty areas: cardiac catheterization, echocardiogram, cardiac stress testing, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation and electrocardiogram/holter and event monitoring.

Cardiac Catheterization
In PCRMC’s state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab, cardiologists are able to perform a specialized study of the heart and coronary arteries, during which a catheter, or thin hollow flexible tube, is inserted into the artery of the groin or arm.

Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. The picture is much more detailed than an x-ray, and it does not involve radiation exposure.

Cardiac Stress Testing
An exercise stress test is a diagnostic test in which a person walks on a treadmill. During this test, the patient is hooked up to equipment that monitors heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, electrical activity, and the level of fatigue. The test shows if the heart’s blood supply is sufficient, and if the heart rhythm is normal. There are various types of cardiac stress testing, including the dobutamine or persantine stress test, a stress echocardiogram and a nuclear stress test.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
A patient may be required to complete Phase II cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation due to the following conditions and diseases: COPD, persistent asthma, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, bronshiolitis obliterans, interstitial fibrosis, occupational or environmental lung disease, sarcoidosis, kyphoscoliosis, ankylosing spondylitis, parkinson’s disease, post-polio syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, diaphragmatic dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, post-tuberculosis syndrome, lung cancer, pre and post thoracic and abdominal surgery, pre and post lung volume reduction surgery, ventilatory dependency, pediatric patients with respiratory disease and obesity related respiratory disease.

Electrocardiography/Holter monitoring/Event Monitoring
Electrocardiography (EKG) is a graphic produced by an electrocardiograph, which records the electrical activity of the heart over time. Analysis of the various waves and normal vectors of depolarization and repolarization yields important diagnostic information.
