Help ensure the safety of children
Become a certified child passenger safety technician

ROLLA - SPRING 2007 - Phelps County Regional Medical Center will host a four-day seminar January 30 - February 2 for people seeking to become certified child passenger safety technicians.

This national standardized certification course combines classroom instruction, hands-on work with car seats and vehicles, and a community safety seat checkup event, where students demonstrate proper use and installation of child restraints and safety belts and then teach these skills to parents.

Successful completion of this course certifies the individual as a CPS technician for two years.

Class will be held in Classroom C in the Educational Services Department at PCRMC from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

This certification is only valid for practice in the U.S. and its territories and on non-domestic U.S. military installations. Registration for all certification courses is $60, excluding any applicable late fees.

All students will receive a copy of the technician manual and a CD-ROM of Child Restraint Manufacturers' Instructions as part of their national program fee. These materials are updated through the Child Passenger Safety TECH Update, published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and available online.

Tens of thousands of individuals have been certified as child passenger safety technicians and instructors since the standardized curriculum and certification program began in 1997.

CPS technicians and instructors put their knowledge to work through a variety of activities, including child safety seat checks where parents and caregivers receive education and hands-on assistance with the proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts.

National certification of these individuals helps to enhance the credibility and professionalism of all child passenger safety advocates and practitioners, the child passenger safety community and the organizations and programs that use the services of certified CPS technicians. Documented CPS training and experience may also help to reduce liability.

Interested participants are required to register online at www.safekids.org. This is an open class with limited attendance.

"You will find this course not only informative but gratifying to the safety of all children," said Debbie Cook, instructor in education services at PCRMC.
