Phelps County Ambulance Service receives car seats from the Auxiliary

ROLLA - SPRING 2007 - Ambulance crews know that patients come in all sizes, and thanks to the PCRMC Auxiliary, three responder inflatable pediatric car seats have been purchased for the Phelps County Ambulance Service.

"State law requires us to have a car seat in the ambulances," said Ray Massey, ambulance manager. "Throughout the years, our car seats have been loaned out and not returned. We got into a situation where we didn't have enough car seats for all the vehicles, and we had to switch out."

Massey explained that because of the shortage, ambulance crews would have to call another vehicle to get a car seat or they couldn't transport the child.

"I went to the Auxiliary and explained the situation," Massey said. "We were really hurting for car seats, and the auxiliary purchased three of them for us."

The pediatric car seats are inflatable, which means they are easy to store in the ambulances.

"A car seat normally takes up a lot of room," he said, "and these seats come in a bag complete with a pump. When we need them, all we have to do is open the bag and inflate the seat."

The seats are not only used to immobilize pediatric patients, but they are used for children when their parents are transported, Massey explained.

"These are special seats that do not take up valuable space in the ambulance," said Tina Pridgeon, director of the auxiliary and volunteer services. "The auxiliary is pleased to sponsor this project."
